Boats

“Bridge of Birds”
Originally a 16ft Newfoundland Dory, built by Ipe and John to an original design by one Roger Hull (now missing presumed drowned).
I will let the Bold Captain Gray provide fuller detail later, though at various times she has been an open dory, a boat rigged for waterbourne camping, a small cabin boat, and latterly a rather nice and individual sailing boat.
“Never knowingly under-engineered” Bridge is not a light vessel, but most who know her would back her heavily going head to head with a narrow-boat!

Waltzing Matilda”
As mentioned elsewhere - designed and built by Nick’s late father-in-law, Ray. Matilda is a one off sailing boat. Described by some of Nick’s ‘proper’ sailing club friends as a “transitorised longboat” - Matilda is, in highly technical terms, “pointy at both ends” making her somewhat ‘excitable’ afloat.
After 2005 trials (year not number), a mirror rig was proved to enable her to point up much closer to the wind than previously, the jury is still out on whether this becomes her normal rig or performance will lose out to aesthetics.

“Skimmin’ the Blues”
Otter class GRP Dinghy, salvaged from the hands of an over zealous sailing club who were about to condemn it to a skip. Looks a little tatty in places but most major parts still function properly (much like her owner). Currently rigged with a Pacer mast and sail” which only required a little modification to the foot (explaining the wrinkling in some of the shots) [probably rig a cunningham in the off season to draw this our a little].
Fastest accelerating boat in the gang occasionally leading to being the first one to discover the wind shadows, and the strength of the wind on the open water - viz “Oh looks like Skim’s capsized - we’d best put a reef in then”.

Other Boats in the Fleet

Scanoe
Coleman built Canadian canoe I understand these can be sailed - but don’t know anyone yet who’s had the bottle for it.. Destined for the next Broads trip to allow intrepid exploration of those fascinating little inlets and gaps among the reeds.

Daydream
Shetland Saxon Inland waterways Cabin Cruiser. Currently resident on a Worcestershire Drive (we tell the neighbours we’re waiting for rain), awaiting children reaching an age where they can be relied upon to leap ashore and operate locks without drowning themselves or other boaters.

Metzler
Inflatable notably used as the expedition boat for the passage of the Kennet and Avon navigation (before its official restoration). The boat, engine and all gear had to be man portable by the along the stretches which simply had not be restored at the time.

Bombard AX2
Second and slightly smaller of the inflatables having weathered the traumas of an attept to use it as a fender by an incompetent narrow boat crew some years ago - still alive and kicking. Discovered it goes like stink with a 4hp Johnson on the transom!
